PREMISE ❀

Ethyraia is a panfandom jamjar game set on the like-named world. It explores concepts of survival, sacrifice, cooperation and human (or alien!) nature. Events will be run every other month (with optional missions in the intermission) and will be geared towards characters working together to survive the situations of an often hostile world.

Presently, Ethyraia accepts the following: canon characters, OCs, CRAUs (within a cap). Characters must be 15 or above. However: If an argument can be made for a character's suitability despite a younger age, this will be examined on a case-by-case basis.

We do not currently accept: fandom or canon OCs (WoW, Guild Wars, etc) or silent protagonists (characters defined as being a vehicle for a story or setting with no indication of characterization beyond what the story demands of them). This may be revised down the line but is not a guaranteed change.

APPLICATIONS

What sort of characters can players apply for?
Players can apply for both canon characters and original characters. They will be judged to the same standards.

Applications for CRAU characters are accepted. A canon-fresh version and a CRAU version of a single character may exist in the game simultaneously — both would contribute to their respective cast cap. This is to allow CRAU characters to continue their journey, while still providing a place for those looking to play the vanilla OU version. The mods encourage (but do not require) communication between people looking to play different versions of the same character.

Ethyraia does not and will never accept applications for:
Fandom OCs (e.g., a Rebellion pilot in Star Wars, a random firebender in Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Silent protagonists (e.g., Link from various Legend of Zelda games, Persona protagonists) in material where they are silent. (However, they may be applied for using supplementary material — e.g., the official Zelda manga, the various Persona anime.)

Canon OCs from properties such as World of Warcraft, Guild Wars and FFXIV.

Malleable protagonists (e.g., Hawke, Shephard, etc.) will be permitted so long as their choice paths within the context of their games are clearly delineated and their application meets other standards. However, to protect the comfort and flexibility of those applying for the canon characters from these franchises that serve as romance options, malleable protagonists cannot have a romance route. The mods recognize that this means that certain plot routes may unfortunately be closed off to such malleable protagonists.

What are the rules on apping from a new canon, or canon updating to a new installment?
We ask that players wait two weeks from the international release to apply for a character or to canon update a character to a new installment. This is to protect other players from incidental plot spoilers.

Are there age limits for players? What about characters ICly?
All players must be over the age of 18.

Characters must be over the age of 15. However, players who believe a younger character whom they play might be a suitable fit are invited to discuss it with the mods in the comments below or at MOD CONTACT. A character such as Ellie from the Last of Us, who is 14 at the beginning of the game, would be an example of a character who is capable of learning to survive on her own and be a contributing member of the society. A character such as Hannah Montana would be a harder sell.

Even in this case, we would not accept a character younger than 10.

Players seeking to play a young teen should bear in mind that younger characters will be expected by the crew of the Adamant to attend school and regular 'child-focused' activities. It is possible for them to blow it off, of course — but allowing a young child to participate in dangerous missions may reflect badly on the PCs as a whole.

What about dead characters, characters without bodies, fatally injured, or disabled characters? All characters will need to take a corporeal form in order to hatch from the eggs. If they do not already have one at their canon point, they will be given a new, fresh, flesh-and-blood body that matches the appearance of their specter, or their appearance in life! If a character already has a corporeal form, even if that form is not human, they may retain it — androids, golems, etc. are fine. Please bear in mind that the acid rain will likely be as dangerous to any non-flesh containers as it is to human beings, so while these characters may be fine without things like food and sleep, they will not be entirely without survival concerns in our setting.

Players of fatally injured characters are welcome to choose to have their characters healed during the arrival process and hatch from the eggs like fresh babies. However, players who would rather engage with the injuries associated with their canon point are welcome to have them emerge from their egg with all their various wounds. Such characters would be immediately shuffled off to medical instead of to the cells and provided treatment as best possible. Remember, though, that medical care is limited here. Feel free to frame the status of these injuries around the IC mentality of the character in question while they were inside of the egg.

Disabled characters in possession of an accessibility device are encouraged but not obligated to include it in their inventory. However, should it not be included in a character's inventory, there are very few accessibility options baked into the setting presently due to the constant struggle for resources.

There are NPCs among the Adamant's survivors who have necessitated the implementation — those that have lost limbs or been blinded or deafened by some occurrence in the planet's harsh environment — and NPCs will often help one another to customize the communication devices to suit these needs. However, these options would not necessarily be immediately available due to resource scarcity.

Anything that would have to be built (such as hearing aids, mobility assistance devices, etc) would likely not exist (except by use of NPCs that already need those items) at your character's arrival. If you are interested in playing these circumstances out, you are not obligated to equip or outfit them. We would only ask that you touch on this in your application, and use content warnings when appropriate with your tags. However, you are also free to handwave that a (device of your choice) was built or provided ASAP to accommodate your character, as we understand that not having them may be difficult or even triggering as a character or player to engage with.

Are powers nerfed in Ethyraia?
The mods of Ethyraia understand that playing with a character's innate powers can be part of their draw, and we encourage the unique approaches to problem solving that can arise from these powers as a way of shaping the world. For this reason, we are not nerfing characters' powers upon game entry. Our goal is to allow players to retain as much of this diversity as possible. This means even characters who depend upon some external power (e.g., the Force, Mist, etc.) to channel their magical or super-scientific abilities may still have access to them in game as long as those powers do not remove them from the game environment.

However, powers that impact the game's setting may lead to unexpected consequences. Characters who use reality-warping or conjuring powers to subvert the survivalist nature of the setting may be surprised by their results. On a small scale, we are happy for players to self-manage and play with the range of these mishaps.

For instance, Hermione Granger may try to conjure a tank of potable water, but instead discover that a new species of flower has sprouted inside the cafeteria, and its pollen gives everyone the worst allergies. Please report these instances to the PLOT ENGAGEMENT page as a Tier II plot just to keep us in the loop. Players may use them as a way to discourage their character from attempting larger scale reformation of the setting, or simply as a fun mechanic to play with. (NOTE: These mishaps will ONLY occur when a power engages with the setting of Ethyraia directly — not from mind-reading, super strength, etc.)

Characters who would like to use these reality-warping and conjuring powers to a more substantial effect with successful outcomes must reach out to us via PLOT ENGAGEMENT to arrange a Tier III player plot. The mod team of Ethyraia is happy to work with you on the effects; however, two things are always certain:
(1) The outcome of the character's actions is not guaranteed to last.
(2) The character will be permanently and entirely depowered as a result of a successful attempt to alter the setting.

For example, 616!Wanda Maximoff can submit a Tier III plot where she says "no more acid rain," but we do not guarantee the rain will not come back, and Wanda will lose ALL of her canon abilities. The mods will clearly discuss the likely longevity of the characters' alterations when arranging the Tier III plot.

Players should also be aware that there may be events that result in full nerfs so as to level the playing field in a particular scope or setting. These effects will always be temporary and linked to an event.

Is there a way for 'normal' characters to gain powers? What if my normal character already gained powers in a previous game?
Yes. Powers and power-ups are available as activity rewards — for more information on AC reward parameters, see the AC BONUSES page. There is a wellspring surrounding the Central Chrysalis. Players who redeem a power-up via AC reward are able to have their character bathe or drink from it — willingly or unwillingly (though plotting around this should be done by the player). Characters who do will find mysterious abilities born from this contact.

The wellspring will not grant additional powers to anyone who already has them, including those who have powers from a CRAU game environment, which they are welcome to include on their application as part of their powers and abilities. Please be detailed in explaining how the prior game environment bestowed characters with those powers, so we can make informed decisions about how it would intersect with our setting.

My character is a vampire, or has other special dietary needs or unique weaknesses — how will those work on Ethyraia?
Because we are permitting players to keep their characters' powers, we will also be asking that players keep the weaknesses associated with those powers. Vampires who are weak to sunlight in their canon will be weak to the Ethyraia's sun too — this also goes for any other characters with sun-based interactions. Operate as if it were Earth's sun for powers and weakness purposes.

That said, some necessary substances will be easier for these characters to come by than others. While vampires will be hard-pressed to find willing blood donors when in a survival situation (the aid station certainly won't be passing out blood rations when blood for transfusions is short), characters with other specific dietary needs may fill out a flora/fauna submission under our BESTIARY AND HERBIARY to invent a way that their character's essential resource is available on this planet. As a caveat, these resources would need to be sparse or difficult to harvest in the interest of supporting our setting's survival stakes.

If you would rather have your character's biology modified by the Central Chrysalis to align with ordinary human food/water needs, please indicate as much on your application.

How do you handle headcanon? What am I allowed to do with my character's backstory?
We do ask that players use only what is shown in and/or can be inferred from canon as backstory. Players are free to extrapolate within the scope of canon, but should make it thematically appropriate to the canon itself.

We take no issue with canon characters that have backgrounds that deal with heavily traumatic topics related to abuse and marginalization — but we do ask that people refrain from using those backgrounds as headcanon for characters with no grounding in canon. This policy is to prevent castmates from having to engage with uncomfortable, conflicting, or even triggering interpretations of a canon situation, relationship, or history.

Players who are uncertain as to whether or not a headcanon would be permissible under these rules, please ask the mods for clarification.

What can characters arrive with? What sort of personal items can they have?
Characters will come out of their eggs with whatever they were wearing at the time, as well as up to five other items (that may or may not have been on or around their person at their canon point) holding some importance, significance, or plain usefulness. These items need not have been on their person at their canon point.

Items such as swords, guns, spellbooks, etc, will all be permitted. Items made of special materials that stand in place of a power or ability may retain special qualities, such as considerable sturdiness, but prospective players will need to specify these qualities on your application in the inventory section. The items will be in a separate egg near the character. To retrieve the items, characters will need to break open the eggs.

Items that are frequently found in bulk, such as cigarettes, ammunition, food, and cleaning products may be packaged thusly in an inventory slot. An extra box of ammunition would be one slot — not a single bullet. Please exercise reasonable discretion on this — a quiver of arrows, for instance, can only hold so many, and resource scarcity is a part of the game's setting.

Items not included in a character's inventory may be regained later through AC BONUSES.

Can character companions or pets come as well? What about 'paired' characters, like two people inhabiting one body, or an AI (such as Tony Stark + Friday)?
Pets will be permitted but would count as an item in the character's inventory — so Korra could have Naga and four other items. Please reserve only one of your character's inventory slots for a pet.

Companion characters will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis for suitability and acceptability reasons, as the mods cannot be canon familiar with all instances! A character like Master Chief from Halo with Cortana would be permissible if the player is willing to provide samples that reflect writing them both, but the 'primary' character would be expected to be engaging with the bulk of interactions within the game. However: please ask first to give us an opportunity to work with you!

MECHANICS

What is the AC requirement of the game?
Activity may be presented by combining TWO (2) of any of the following types of activity:
☆ A log of 5 or more comments
☆ A network thread of 10 or more comments
☆ An open post in the network or log community where the player made a reasonable effort to reply**
Players may mix and match the above to any effect, as long as it meets the two proof requirement (e.g., 10 network comments and 5 log comments, or one open log and 10 network comments). "Reasonable effort to reply" to an open thread is defined as responses to some or most of the replies accrued on an open thread.

Ethyraia has two activity policies designed to discourage insular threading and clique behavior. First, threads conducted in private character journals may be used as activity proofs, but at a 2:1 ratio. Two inbox threads of 10 or more comments counts as a single proof. Second, activity proofs across two months must demonstrate an effort to thread with different characters. For example, if Susan submits threads with Joe and Mike as activity for February, their March activity cannot be with Joe or Mike.

However, mods reserve the right to change this requirement down the line if we find that it is too much or too little. Players will get one full activity period of warning regarding any changes to the activity system.

What is the time ratio of the game? Which timezone does it run on?
Ethyraia is 1:1 and runs on Eastern Standard Time. Applications and reserves will be posted at 21:00 EST, as will any event posts.

Will there be a network or a way for characters to communicate?
Yes! The characters will be given comms devices by the crew of the Adamant. They will have basic functionality for text, video and messaging. However, they will not have an internet feature.

All formats are available for both direct messages (person-to-person) and public messages (person-to-group). The video and voice features can function one of two ways: public messages can be posted as a voice or video recording (the default video/voice message option) or livestreamed (this would be akin to a Zoom conference, Facebook Live video, or FaceTime call). For the latter, please specify LIVE as part of the label.

Network IDs are not static, and characters are able to change them ICly. They can also create multiple sock IDs, although they cannot be anonymous. However, the metadata associated with every device (think IP address or serial number) is static and associated with a given device. Anyone skilled enough with hacking could, in theory (and with player permission), discover if many sock IDs are associated with a single serial number.

These devices also house a connection to the remainder of the Adamant's intranet, but PC access is currently restricted. PCs who come to be trusted by the Adamant's crew will be provisioned access to in-universe logs, bestiaries, maps, and other IC information. This information could also be accessed via hacking by skilled characters. Players who wish to go this route should go to plot engagement and submit a request.

Additionally, characters may bring their own devices — iPhone, Android, commlink, etc — and have them modified to access the local network. Characters with relevant skills can do the modifications themselves, or any character can take their devices to one of the tech experts in the Engineering division to have it modified.

What about language/communication barriers?
This one is quite mysterious... Everyone on Ethyraia seems able to understand each other, regardless of their native language. It seems like it might have something to do with the Central Chrysalis, perhaps?

How is death handled in Ethyraia?
Death in Ethyraia is permanent. If a character is killed or dies in-game, they are considered to be dropped from the game. Players may reapply for a character who died in game, but that character will be considered canon-fresh and cannot retain or regain any memories of the game.

In addition, applications for characters who died in-game will not be accepted in the application cycle following their in-game death. This is to drive home the finality of death, and allow characters still in-game to grieve. After this 'mourning period' app round is over, the character will become available again.

Can characters get pregnant in Ethyraia? What about characters who are pregnant on arrival? (cw: fertility, menstruation)
Menstruating characters may become pregnant in Ethyraia. All pregnancy plots must be discussed with the mods via plot engagement, as they require mod approval. Please bear in mind that limited resources and nutrition may affect a character's menstrual cycle, and that limited supplies includes contraceptives and sanitary menstrual products.

Players of menstruating characters who are not interested in engaging with these topics may have the Chryalis affect their fertility — either by lowering the frequency or outright eliminating the ovulation/menstruation cycle. The degree to which characters become ICly aware of these changes to their fertility is up to player discretion, but any discussion should bear appropriate content warnings.

If a character is already pregnant at their canon point and arrives in game, players can handle it in one of two ways:

(1) Players may essentially 'freeze' the pregnancy in stasis, or
(2) Players may play out the pregnancy and the character can give birth.

Players of pregnant characters who are interested in another option may contact the mods.

SETTING AND PLOTS

What sort of content is allowed in the game?
Ethyraia places no restrictions on in-game content. Players can feel free to engage with the setting however they wish. However, logs containing any adult content must be locked and appropriately labeled. The same goes for any content that may be considered triggering. Failure to respect the boundaries of other players is grounds for removal from the game. If someone requests that you warn for content, we would ask that you please respect that request.

What sort of plots can I expect from the game, and how often will they be run?
Presently, the majority of plots will be focused on survival in a hostile world. They may include a need to navigate the surrounding area, explore the old ruin of the Adamant, make contact with the Thessyx, etc. They may involve attacks from hostile creatures, meteor showers and dreamscape worlds. There may also be aspects of events (though it will generally not be a focus) with an aphrodisiac type effect. This will always be an optional part of the plots, but it will be occasionally present should people wish to use it to engage with. Such content should always be properly marked and locked.

Events will generally be aimed at giving a broad variety of characters something to do (characters geared towards fighting will have things to fight, characters geared towards research are encouraged to work closely with the moderation team to find out world secrets or weaknesses of alien fauna, characters who are doctors or healers will be able to tend to both PCs and NPCs in aid tents, etc).

There are elements of an overarching story to Ethyraia, but it isn't a grand mystery as that tends to provide an unfair advantage to early adopters of the game. Rather, Ethyraia emphasizes a balance of conflict and CR-building events that will encourage characters to rely on one another in ways that facilitate growth.

What kind of opt-outs will be provided for game-wide plots?
Complete opt-outs for game-wide plots will not be provided. However, any triggering content related to game-wide plots will be clearly avoidable on an OOC level. Players who feel that material which is triggering to them is not sufficiently avoidable, or who feel they have a compelling reason to entirely avoid a game-wide plot, should contact the mods here.

How often will events happen?
The mod team will run events on a bi-monthly basis. Plots will usually run for 1-2 weeks at a time. Large-scale player plots may occasionally be substituted for World Events, if they have far-reaching affects and will impact a large enough number of PCs. For information on how to do this, please check the PLOT ENGAGEMENT page.

As an example: if a plot begins on January 20th, it will end roughly on January 31st and the next one will be roughly March 20th. This is to give people an opportunity to finish threads without feeling as if they're hurrying from one event to another.

However: there will be options for mission-based threading in-between plots based on AC BONUSES. There will also be room for player plots and lighter happenings that lean more slice of life — a small Christmas festival would be an example of a slice of life intermission between world events.

If we find this balance to be lacking once the game is underway, we will reevaluate our position at that time and incorporate player feedback.

What about the flora and fauna in the area? Can you describe it?
The BESTIARY will be updated periodically. Players are encouraged to submit any animal, real or imagined, that they wish to see in the world to this page.

Please remember that this information will not immediately be made IC knowledge! PCs will have to work for the clearance levels on their communication devices to gain access to the information. A character who immediately knows that a snorflak can spit acid on sight is probably verging into infomodding territory and would be discouraged.

The flora in the world can be described as hostile, be it overtly violent, poisonous, or interacting strangely with PC biology. Similar to the bestiary, there is a list of plant-life (HERBIARY) that will also be periodically updated. As with the bestiary, players are strongly encouraged to submit plants they wish to see! Feel free to give them strange effects as well (ie: a character who gets plant sap on their skin may hallucinate their worst nightmares! Breathing spores from this flower will cause temporary blindness!). As this is a very alien world with science fantasy overtones, the sky really is the limit.

What about characters with special requirements to life? Or non-humans that are different in size/require different diets? Transformers, vampires, etc.
Your characters do not have to be humanized. However, it is acceptable for players to choose to humanize their characters with the option for in-world power-ups via AC bonuses.

Vampires will be treated cautiously by the crew of the Adamant, and will be given access to local blood banks. However, please remember: the Adamant's crew is human, and they are from Earth and are aware of standard Earth-lore. While some crew-members may be perfectly willing to accept vampires/elves/fae/etc, some may express bias towards these creatures, or skepticism about their inherent decency. Please do not abuse this mechanic. It is there to generate light conflict and friction with the crew, but any desire to escalate this disdain should go through PLOT ENGAGEMENT

Players who wish to app a character that is considerably larger than a human are not expected to size them down. However, they will find themselves at something of a disadvantage, as everything within the Adamant is built for humans — from clothing to communication devices to beds. Players who wish to size their characters down may do so, but players may also play with the difficulties inherent in their size discrepancy.

Are drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and other stimulants available on Ethyraia?
Yes! The engineering crew of the Adamant runs a distillery. The liquor is said to double as a paint stripper, so there is plenty of room for improvement there. If any enterprising PC wanted to step up to the plate...

There are also a variety of drugs. Some are made from compounds native to the planet, others are modified from Earth strains. Cannabis, opiates, and hallucinogenics are available through means both legal and not. There are also plenty of plants outside of Basecamp Leviathan for any characters curious enough to sample them!

There may be a few independent or black market cigarette-sellers growing it on the down-low willing to make a deal... for the right price. Feel free to create or hand-wave these NPCs as existing and assume a reasonable quantity of cigarettes (hand-rolled!) is available for purchase, but keep in mind that they will not be overly abundant, be cognizant of rationing!

Tobacco, cannabis, and other Earth-native plants will not grow outside the Leviathan due to their lack of resistance to the acid rain. However, while the topsoil is somewhat damaged and degraded as far as growing Earth-based plants would go, if you dig down about a foot, the soil is quite fertile and heavy with nitrates and can be used to grow if there is: a) a sufficient light source within the proper spectrum and b) adequate watering and space, as well as troughs or 'plots' he would need to justify using for such an endeavor. There is, of course, also the matter of finding seeds. Any character looking to get a cut of the illegal substances business should submit a request to PLOT ENGAGEMENT.

RULES ❀

Ethyraia does not operate on a strike system. Players will be warned for minor infractions, but behavior that in other games might warrant a strike will more likely result in a ban in Ethyraia should the situation be grievous enough. This is due to the fact that many problem players view strikes as an allowance of prohibited behavior — so long as they are only doing it twice. In the interest of protecting our player-base, we can and will reserve the right to remove players at mod discretion.

Please do not think that implies we will do so unfairly — the mods believe that we have all spent sufficient time in this hobby, by and large we all know what acceptable behavior is and isn't. Please consider the rules below for further clarifications.

01. Be considerate and respectful of those you share a game space with.
We will not tolerate any instances of harassment or bullying. This game is meant to be a fun and safe space for all — if you take actions that jeopardize those things at the expense of another, we will be speaking to you directly if we become aware of this matter.

If you feel a player has broken the above rules, please come to the moderators with your proofs promptly. If no proof is given, or if no complaint is made directly to the mods, no action can be taken.

Similarly, we ask that you respect the mods and the decisions we make for the game. We do not expect you to always agree with us, but please be courteous with any disagreements you raise.

To be transparent, we have a zero tolerance policy for OOC instances of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bullying or harassment of any sort. Anyone found to be engaging with the above will be removed from the game without room for appeal.

Please be aware that disagreements or criticism are not harassment in and of themselves and do not count unless the language and approach taken begins to skirt that line. (Telling someone their characterizations sucks and they should leave RP forever is harassment. Detailing instances in canon where a character acted contrary to their portrayal is not.)

02. No Infomodding, Metagaming or Godmoding.
We all play a variety of characters from a wide variety of worlds. Your character may be the best at what they do in their universe, but please understand the same may not be true in a panfandom setting. A natural leader in their canon will not necessarily have the tools or knowledge to lead in Ethyraia no matter how you think it may 'ruin' their character not to be afforded the privilege and consideration of their canon.

If you are playing a perceptive character (such as Sherlock Holmes, Bruce Wayne, etc), please allow other players/characters an opportunity to opt in to these perceptions rather than having to opt out of them. An example of this is — it will often ruin someone's experience to have their villainous character outed as villainous immediately because someone had a 'feeling'.

03. Stay IC.
Growth is an expected part of the RP experience. It's why we're all here! But we do expect such developments to be reasonable and follow a character's established patterns of behavior. Please understand that it can be difficult for castmates to reconcile a wildly different version of a character than what they're accustomed to.

04. Please ensure that IC remains IC and OOC remains OOC.
A character disagreeing with yours does not mean the player does. Likewise, a player who is writing an IC ship with you is not dating you IRL! If you seem to struggle with maintaining these boundaries, this may not be an ideal game for you.

Before you take an IC action, please also consider its impact on other characters ICly and other players OOCly. Games are the most fun for everyone if you strive to find a balance between what works for you as well as others!

SETTING ❀

ARRIVAL

You don't remember the details of your arrival. What you do know is that you wake up in a rather disgusting, goopy mess inside a squishy organic egg. Once you puncture the egg sac, you'll find yourself in knee-deep water. Slimy, disoriented... probably unhappy, and definitely slimy...

(really, the slime! it's everywhere!)

Nearby sits a large, pulsing white orb, almost like a cocoon, nearly the size of an elephant. It hangs from a mess of what seems like odd, organic sinew and matter, and there is a definite sense that something inside it is alive. it seems to have some unnatural effect on gravity, because water droplets seem to be suspended in the air around it, and you will experience the occasional bout of weightlessness within a fifteen meter radius all around this strange... thing.

Nearby will be another egg that seems to call to you — it will open when you touch it. Inside, you will find any items that came along with you. In a rather funny turn of fate, they aren't slimy. Maybe the gods of slime just have it out for you, who knows.

As you splash your way (angrily? dejectedly? curiously?) out of the pool of water, you will be greeted by Ashley Porter, a profusely apologetic (and riotously clumsy) man who explains in a fast-paced, nervous manner that it's all his fault that you're here on Ethyraia, he's so terribly sorry, and won't you let him help you get settled in?

__

You're in, as it happens, the body of an enormous desiccated animal corpse currently in use as a base for the survivors of a shipwreck. That would be, a starship wreck, not the regular sort with sails and such. Ashley will chatter a little about it as he helps you to the showers so you can (finally!) be free of the slime.

The survivors of the wreck dubbed the animal corpse 'the Leviathan' — little wonder, since it seems to resemble an enormous dragon. Nearly two kilometers from nose to tailtip, it curls in on itself as if it passed on peacefully while sleeping. No one is quite sure how long ago it died, but in the intervening time, its bones — made of no compound recognizable to Earth — petrified. Swaths of blue-white crystal have grown into various nooks and crannies, glowing faintly. Its skin has split in areas, pulled taut, and in others has turned nearly unbreakable. Its wings stretch out overhead, giving shelter to the population of humans that have taken refuge in its body cavity against the acid rain that plagues the planet.

The survivors of the UCSS Adamant have been on Ethyraia a little over three years. In that time, they have worked to add important features to their basecamp.

Make yourself comfortable, it seems you might end up being here a while...

NETWORK

So, you've arrived in Ethyraia! Woken up in a disgusting, gooey eggy mess. You've stumbled out, located your personal belongings (also in an egg! also goopy! Wild!) and have listened to the welcoming spiel by Captain Childe and are trying to take stock of their surroundings.

Your character will be offered a smartwatch! Highly technological, these little devices can do a wide variety of things! They can post to the Adamant's network (be careful, all the NPCs can see what you post! PCs will have to build themselves a private network if they want to communicate amongst themselves, or use inboxes!) and, once they have gained the trust of the NPCs, they will have access to the Adamant's bestiary and herbiary, as well as mission reports (to a certain level of clearance) in the past.

These smartwatches do not have internet access or anything like it. They weren't really intended for use in this way, whoops!

The watches can have text input, video input, audio input, or do text to speech or vice versa. They also have accessibility features for characters who may be sight, speech or hearing impaired.

Characters may also use their own devices. If a character happens to bring their phone with them, they could either modify it (if they have the skill) or speak with a local NPC technician to sync it to the local network. Wireless charging is the way of the future, so you shouldn't ever need to worry about it running low on battery!

APPLICATIONS ❀

APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED
Applications are open on September 1st.

RESERVES ONLY September 1st @ 9:00pm EST - September 3rd @ 9:00pm EST
OPEN APPS September 3rd @ 9:00pm EST - September 5th @ 9:00pm EST

Received Applications:

Thank you for your interest in applying at Ethyraia! First, please make sure you've perused our FAQ and our RULES section. Applying in the game means you agree to abide by the rules thereof.

As a reminder:
☆ You may apply for two (2) characters per round.
☆ Reserves are not required to apply, but a reserve guarantees we review your application before anyone else's application for the same character. Two reserves may be made in a reserve period.
☆ Applications are screened.
☆ Please wait to submit your application until the 'Applications are CLOSED' comment disappears and the 'Applications are OPEN' comment appears.

We accept applications for the following character types:
☆ Canon Characters
☆ Original Characters
☆ CRAU Characters
☆ Malleable Protagonists

We DO NOT accept applications for the following character types:
☆ Historical Figures (fictionalized versions fine)
☆ Fandom OCs
☆ Canon OCs
☆ Silent Protagonists

For more information on appable characters, see our FAQ.

Regarding the Application Process:
Please see the breakdown below for more information on what exactly we're looking for and what factors into an app that is accepted, given revision requests, or declined.

☆ If any two sections on the app do not meet our guidelines, we will request revisions. However, as personality and samples are considered to be the most important part of the app, failure to meet our standards in any one of these sections will result in revisions regardless of the suitability of the other sections.

☆ Applications may be declined outright if they demonstrate poor grammatical or technical skill throughout (a few typos are fine!), if they provide samples which lack engagement (e.g., hooks, yes-and), or if they reflect an insufficient grasp of the character in question.

☆ Revisions must be submitted within (48) hours of their request or the application will be automatically declined.

Player;

NAME: What shall we call you?
AGE: A simple 18+ is acceptable.
PRONOUNS: How should others refer to you? Please use he/him format.
CONTACT: Plurk, Discord, PM — anything that allows us to reach you.
OTHER CHARACTERS PLAYED: Please let us know if you play any other characters or are applying for another in this round.

Character;

CHARACTER NAME: Full name and any nicknames, in western order.
AGE: If no canon age is given, please use your best guess as supported by canon.
CANON: Please specify if there are multiple properties or installments under a single banner.
CANON POINT: Where are you pulling them from? Please don't just list episode/issue/chapter here, but instead write out a brief (one sentence) blurb contextualizing the canon point by referencing a single recent, major plot event.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY: Links will not be accepted for this section. Please write a 2-3 paragraph summary of a character's history. This should fall between 300-500 words.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: If your character is a CRAU, please give us an idea of any important changes your character has undergone in a brief detailing of how they have been affected by a previous game setting. This should fall between 300-500 words.

PERSONALITY: Describe your character's personality for us. Please include both strengths and flaws/weaknesses. If this section exceeds 500 words we will be asking for revisions, so please be succinct.

SUITABILITY: Please remember that the base theme of Ethyraia will be survivalism-based, and there will be many instances of danger and conflict. Character suitability and how you expect to approach that as a player is an integral part of your application.

ABILITIES/SKILLS: This section covers both superhuman abilities and trained skills a character may have. This section as written for Bruce Wayne should be almost as detailed as Clark Kent! We ask that you provide clear specific details, but not take more than 500 words in this section. A bulleted list is fine.

Note: There are no nerfs in Ethyraia; however, any powers that have the ability to impact the setting in ways that interfere with the survivalist themes have the potential to set off strange effects and can possibly become nerfed if used to disrupt the setting, so it is important that the mods be aware of your character's capability. (For more information, see the APPLICATIONS section of the FAQ.)
If you realize later that you have forgotten an ability here, please speak to the mods before using it in-game. An example of this would be: if you neglect to mention Rey's force healing from Star Wars — we would prefer to be given a heads up before you use it in game. This is to ensure that people do not try to sneak powers in under the rug and to mitigate the possibility of godmodding excessive powers into the game setting without approval.

INVENTORY: You are allowed up to 5 items beyond your character's worn clothing. A uniform (such as a superhero's costume) would consist of one thing (example: Batgirl's suit + belt would be one item, however: her utility belt would not come with gadgets unless you were willing to use more slots for them!) You may also request a character's 'pet' for one inventory slot. Aang's flying bison would be allowed, but it would take up an 'item' slot!

Samples;

Samples make the most impact on the moderators' judgement — we will decline people on the grounds of writing weaknesses like insufficient hooks, little demonstration of scene movement and improv ("yes, and"), or an inability to properly portray the character's described personality.

One sample must be less than one year old (12 calendar months). The others can be older. Samples do not need to be set within Ethyraia's universe — memes and prior game threads are fine so long as one is within a year! We also allow AU samples as long as they still demonstrate the personality traits in your app. All we ask is that the character be recognizable as the version you intend to play — no alignment swap AUs please!

COMMUNICATION SAMPLE: Please link to a thread that shows how and what your character communicates. This can be a network sample or an in-person conversation. This thread must be of AC length — if log, at least five of your comments; if network, at least ten.

INTERIORITY SAMPLE: Please link to a thread that shows how your character thinks. This could be any thread with sufficient depth into their thoughts, interpretations, and decision-making. We are looking for samples that highlight their personality. This thread must be of AC length — if log, at least five of your comments; if network, at least ten.

CONFLICT SAMPLE: Please link to a thread that shows how your character handles conflict. This can be as simple as a disagreement between two characters, a thought process behind a tough decision that causes inner turmoil, or an action scene of some kind. This thread must be of AC length — if log, at least five of your comments; if network, at least ten. Please include a 1-2 sentence explanation of why your sample represents the theme if there is no overt argument happening in the scene.

CANON UPDATES ❀
Characters who are updated to a more recent canonpoint will vanish on a date selected by the player following the approval of their canon update form. Updated characters 'reawaken' in an egg with the next batch of incoming PCs. Updated characters' memories of Ethyraia may be a bit fuzzy at first, but will become stronger over time.

Characters who return home for an update do not remember Ethyraia while they're there and cannot effect change on their canon occurrences.

To apply for a canon update, please complete the following form:

raiamods: (Default)

ACTIVITY CHECK ❀
In order to ensure that players are remaining active, activity proofs will be submitted monthly. An activity period runs from 00:01 AM on the 1st of each month to 23:59 PM on the last day of the same month, Eastern Standard Time (EST). All tags counted towards activity must be posted during that activity period, but the threads themselves may have started prior to the relevant activity period. However, the same thread cannot be used over multiple activity periods.

Players will be reminded to submit their AC one week before the activity check, but late activity will not be accepted. Activity will be processed as it's posted to give players time to correct any errors in submission, so please don't post your comment until you have full activity (or a hiatus note)! All activity proof must be submitted by 21:00 EST on the last day of the month.

Activity may be presented by combining TWO (2) of any of the following types of activity:

☆ A log of 5 or more comments
☆ A network thread of 10 or more comments (including character inboxes)
☆ An open post in the network or log community where the player made a reasonable effort to reply**

Players may mix and match the above to any effect, as long as it meets the two proof requirement (e.g., 10 network comments and 5 log comments, or one open log and 10 network comments). "Reasonable effort to reply" to an open thread is defined as responses to some or most of the replies accrued on an open thread.

Players on hiatus may only use a hiatus to exempt them from Activity Check once every three months. Players who have posted their hiatus before the monthly SOTG post need not post check-in AC on the Activity Check page. Players who take a retroactive hiatus after the SOTG post has gone up should post a "hiatus" comment to their Activity Check sub-header to ensure their hiatus notice isn't missed.

After acceptance, please respond to this post with a 'top level' that has your name. Reply to that top level with sub-headers for each of your characters. Then, when AC is due, reply to that top level with the proof of your activity (for the first month in-game, activity is waived and replaced with the NEW CHARACTER FORM).

NEW CHARACTER FORM:
Use the form below for your character's first month in game.

GENERAL ACTIVITY:
Use the form below for every subsequent month.

Players putting in for bonus AC, please note: threads used for standard AC cannot be used for bonus AC and vice versa. Please see AC BONUSES for more details on what it is and how to submit it!
raiamods: (Default)

ACTIVITY BONUSES ❀
Players who engage in the game above and beyond the minimum activity requirement are able to redeem rewards here for their extra threads.

There are four types of rewards:

☆ Plot/Story Tidbits
☆ Interesting Weapons or Items (tooled by the mods for your characters)
☆ An Item From Your Character's Home
☆ An In-Game Power/Ability (granted by the central chrysalis pool)

Additionally, if you stock up TWO CONSECUTIVE AC BONUS SUBMISSIONS to open up an additional character slot for yourself in total (e.g., you could play a third character) and/or in a specific capped cast (e.g., you could play the 6th Marvel character). This slot would allow you to break multiple caps at once, and characters apped using this bonus will not be counted towards the cast's overall cap.

There are some limitations in place to bear in mind when submitting Bonus AC. Please read the following guidelines thoroughly, as they may have been updated:

☆ Threads that you submitted for AC cannot be submitted for bonus AC, and vice versa.

☆ Bonus activity may only be submitted once every three months.

☆ Bonus activity threads must reach AC length within a singular activity period.

☆ Any threads linked for bonus activity must take place within an activity period where you already made full AC — you may not have been hiatus or on check-in, unless you can also furnish full proof of normal activity on top of your bonus thread.

☆ After your first bonus AC submission, you must submit two AC-length threads for further rewards.

☆ You do not need to submit for a reward in the same month that you earn your bonus activity. Links to bonus activity can be banked on the Activity Check page, and posted here at a later date to exchange for a reward.

Presently, players are expected to choose one type of reward. However, if, for example, everyone chooses plot/story tidbits, the availability of these may run low as the mods run out of story to share. The mods will be mindful of the balance here, and of player satisfaction with rewards. If the reward scheme needs to be adjusted down the line, the mods may revisit this.

To apply for an activity reward, submit the following form:

raiamods: (Default)

HIATUS AND DROP ❀

A HIATUS provides exemption from activity check for the month associated with that hiatus length. If your hiatus straddles two months, the exemption will apply to the month that more days fall in, or the first of the two months if they are equal.

Players may only use a hiatus to exempt them from Activity Check once every three months.

If extenuating circumstances exist, players should reach out to the mods via the MOD CONTACT page to work out a solution or exception.

Players who DROP from the game must wait one application round to reapply for the same character.

Characters that are dropped disappear unless players state that their character will be killed. Applications are not accepted for characters that have been killed until the second application cycle after the death, and may never be brought back with memories of their prior time in game.

In either case, please fill out the form below and write DROP or HIATUS in the subject line.

LOCATIONS ❀

ETHYRAIA

Ethyraia is a class-I planet. Ethyraia is the second planet from its sun, a stable K-class star (or 'orange dwarf'). Its radius is approximately 4600 kilometers, and it has three small moons as well as a significant dust belt/debris disc around the planet resulting from the collision of an asteroid with one of its moons some many billion years ago.

The odds were just right to tip the scales over into the development of multicellular organisms! Well within its solar system's circumstellar habitable zone, Ethyraia enjoys such luxuries as rapid temperature changes, regular meteor showers, acid rain, and other dangerous and unpredictable atmospheric phenomena! The weather is considered to be volatile. The average temperature is 19 degrees Celsius, but it can go as high as 60 degrees Celsius in some areas, and as low as -70 in others.

Numerous oceans cover Ethyraia's surface, as well as large subterranean lakes. It has expansive jungle-like biomes, as well as deserts and, nearer to the planet's poles, vast swaths of ice several kilometers thick. Regular volcanic eruptions can result in atmospheric dust blotting out the sun, which can last for 5-10 'Earth' years, and impact the development of planetary flora. Most fauna is omnivorous, but then again, so are most of the plants.

Beyond Basecamp Leviathan, the world is a wild and unpredictable place, full of danger. Carnivorous plants are the norm, and there are all manner of wild creatures eager to fight it out for their place at the top of the food chain. The landscape close to the basecamp is a high elevation, so plants will exist on rocky outcroppings along cliff-faces. The landscape here is mostly high desert, which means it is full of thin, calf-high grasses, scrub plants, and non arable land polluted by dense, alkaline soil and rocks. Once you get a little further out, specifically to the north-west, the soil will become quite fertile, but Earth plants would find themselves hard-pressed to grow in it without proper precautions for the acid rain in place.

As of right now, the only accessible locations are those within the BASECAMP LEVIATHAN.

QUICK FACTS:
❀ The Adamant crashed three years ago, killing a considerable percentage of its passengers and crew.
❀ 12,000 passengers and crew members survived the crash. This population includes a mix of the military crew members, laborers, and once-wealthy elites who purchased passage, all of whom represent a diverse range of ethnicities, ages, and genders.
❀ The Adamant's original purpose was a colonizing mission. Ethyraia was not their destination.

BASECAMP LEVIATHAN

The Basecamp is situated inside the body of the dragon. Said dragon, were it alive, would be approximately almost two kilometers from nose to tailtip, and would have had an impressive wingspan of almost twice that! No one is sure when the dragon came to rest, but it was long enough now for its bones, made of no material known to man, to petrify. Blue-white crystals grow along the exposed parts of the bone, where the desiccated flesh has pulled back. The dragon seems to have passed away peacefully — there is no indication of damage or trauma to its skeleton, it simply seems to have curled up as if sleeping. Its massive wings are folded almost protectively overhead, and cover a significant portion of the surrounding land, protecting it from acid rainfall and providing shelter to the humans that live there.

QUICK FACTS:
❀ Survivors, both passengers and crew members, live at the basecamp. It is the size of a small town.
❀ The settlement is made up of salvage from the Adamant. For example, the basecamp pulls its water from a nearby ocean via a desalination pipeline built by the crew and laborers and powered using the Adamant's reactor.
❀ Communal, rotational sleeping is mainly for single crew members (and hatchlings).
❀ The basecamp is now riddled with sinkholes in the SHOWERS, MEMORIAL WALL, and GYMNASIUM locations.

LIFE & CULTURE
LAWS & JUSTICE

Because these people have had to rely on each other in times of great stress and fear, a foundation of trust and respect has been established among the Adamant's survivors — they self-govern through neighborhood watches and civilian committees for most matters that we would generally see as requiring policing. Most matters are settled between affected individuals because We Live In A Society, dangit! If two people get into a fist-fight, there's a sort of 'just let them get it out' mentality, and generally others will only intervene if it looks like one or the other might get seriously hurt!

There are rules, of course, as with any society — theft and violent crimes are especially heinous in a population that is already struggling to survive. To avoid wasting resources or lives, crimes are primarily settled in a restorative justice framework. Theft, for instance, is socially discouraged because everyone is in the same desperate situation. And while it wouldn't earn someone jail time, anyone caught stealing (these people generally try to share what they have in terms of food, clothing, resources, etc) would need to return the items in question and be subject to the collective disappointment of the others. They may also end up doing the less desirable jobs, etc, but once they have made their amends, there would be no further communal shaming. They would simply be welcomed back into society. (However, because the cultural norm is to share, there is little incentive for people to steal to begin with.)

In addition, in any case where there is a wronged party, that party engages with a civilian council (think a jury of peers) to determine the penalty. The above is an example of theft, but for murder, rape, and other violent crime, exile is not uncommon. Of course, on a planet like Ethyraia, exile from under the dragon's wings is practically a death sentence. No one can say for sure if anyone who has been exiled survived  — they're not welcome at the basecamp anymore. (Anyone inquiring directly about these crimes might get an odd look — they are quite rare.)

One of the things that is somewhat rigidly enforced is the safety of the basecamp. If someone through direct action (deliberate sabotage) or passive inaction (falling asleep on a perimeter shift) causes harm to the Basecamp's citizenry, there are different ways of dealing with these individuals. For the former, a jury will often resort to exile. To the latter, the individual will spend time in the very cells that the hatchlings were in. The wronged party determines the length of time they are to serve, with the imprisoned is only fed if people choose to bring them food.
An example of this might be: if someone falls asleep on perimeter, and this allows a creature to sneak into the camp and kill a member of someone's family, the surviving member would engage with a civilian council to determine the length of their sentence. These sentences are generally not long — they really cannot afford to lock an able-bodied person up indefinitely unless their crimes are especially egregious. Another sentence for this manner of crime may be: having to take on the work or duties of the deceased person for a certain period of time, which is done so that they may understand the full scope of what the community has lost with their error.

Crime is also deterred in other ways. Security confiscates communal weapons found among the general NPC population, as they are not permitted to be carried within the basecamp. Even security officers surrender any communal weapons at the end of their shift, as there are no exceptions to this rule. But speaking generally, they would not call themselves a police force, nor are they treated as one by the basecamp citizens. (As the security force determines that characters found weapons in those eggs, they will be deciding what to do about weapons that are clearly not communal, settling eventually on the decision that they won't be seizing anyone's personal property, especially those who have so little to begin with.)

Captain Childe doesn't tolerate abuse of power, and she's set the tone for the rest of them to follow. She digs latrines with the best of them, takes the same rations and works the same shifts — and she expects every single person from the Adamant's remaining Naval crew to do the same. The civilians respect the crew and do not feel afraid or nervous around them as a result.

DAILY LIFE

The daily grind in Ethyraia seems to be fairly... well, grind-y. There are three shifts: A, B, and C. Most departments follow the A shift, where folks get up in the morning and follow the schedule laid out below. B shifters start in the afternoon and take their midday breaks overnight. C shifters are the nightshifters who work through the break times laid out here, and have A shift's times off.

People wake early to manage their chores in the early hours. Everyone breaks during the hot hours of the afternoon to nap or lounge around, sometimes they take in the daily movie at the Theatre. Then, it's back to work for the afternoon shift. People generally work from 7 AM to 11 AM, and then have between 11 AM and 3 PM 'off', then work again until 11 PM.

Ideally, the Adamant's survivors will work 4 days and has 3 off in a week, but oftentimes this is cancelled due to need. No one is expected to work through injuries.

It's not mandatory that the Hatchlings work, but those that don't pull their weight will find themselves shunned by the community. The quality of their rations, and their overall care will decrease. There isn't enough to go around on the best days, much less when someone isn't contributing at all!

If you think your character wouldn't be interested in helping or pitching in, that's fine! However, please be aware of the consequences that will follow — a decrease in NPC esteem, support, etc. The NPCs understand that the Hatchlings didn't ask to be here, but they simply do not have the resources or manpower to accommodate for anyone who doesn't want to work or assist in engaging with local infrastructure. Your character will not be ICly ousted from the basecamp, but they will experience a poorer quality of food and little social engagement from the NPCs. Even Captain Childe picks up a trenching tool with the best of them!

Additionally, no one forces characters to remain at the Basecamp! If they would like to leave and go exploring on their own, that is perfectly welcome. Errands outside of the basecamp should follow the guidance laid out on our PLOT ENGAGEMENT page; be sure to submit a request if your mission demands it. If your character leaves the basecamp and wanders outside the Leviathan, they may begin to notice that what they perhaps took as a giant cave is actually an enormous dragon. Everything they see that seems 'human made' will look varying levels of worn down, patched, repaired and patched again. This is not a place of prosperity and happiness. Many people are recently injured, or have new scars or missing limbs.

What kind of missions can my character go on without a plot request?
❀ Small groups of fewer than 5 characters can repeat missions that have already been completed.
❀ These missions may be to harvest supplies from the surrounding area, chart land nearby, or retrieve medical supplies or rations from the Adamant.
❀ These groups will not find anything new, and these missions take several days and yield small rewards.

AID STATION
Near the entrance between the ribs is the aid station, positioned in such a way that anyone returning from beyond the basecamp will have assistance as quickly as possible. It's somewhat well-stocked with medicine, antibiotics, ultrasonics for broken bones, dressings and sutures, as well as a 3-D printing set-up for casts, braces, etc. There are devices that can do x-rays, diagnose various maladies and diseases, et al.

However, it should be noted: the supplies aren't limitless. Many people will forego pain medication for minor to moderate injury to stretch their supplies. 'Dressings' are, at this point, generally the rags of clothing too worn to be functional. Some people have turned to the local flora in attempts to isolate useful compounds that can then be refined into medicines.

Presently, the aid station is three heavy tents that have been cobbled together. There are 'bunks' that were pulled from the wreckage of the Adamant. Old mattresses that have been stitched and repaired. Everything is clean, but worn and close to breaking down. The 3-D printer routinely has to be fixed. Characters with knowledge of advanced machinery (remember, it's the year 2801 by the Earth calendar, a mechanic from the 1970s might be a little out of their depth!) may be able to offer assistance in fixing it up or improving its design.

The Aid Station is being run by a very harried woman named Sunya Hyacinth, who fits the description of 'overworked and underpaid' to a T. She doesn't have time to reach out to any recruits, but if you wander into the Aid Station you might find yourself being put to work. Just be careful — if she decides you have higher accreditation than she does, she might just decide to dump her practice on your lap for a week so she can go take a vacation!

Standard injuries you may see include acid burns, broken bones, and bad cuts and gashes out of the engineering department who's hard at work repairing the sink holes around the base. Some of the 'ill' being treated will also have psychological effects. PTSD is common, and there are no officially 'trained' counsellors, just people who try to listen and help.

ARMORY
The armory is where the weapons salvaged from the Adamant and anything made locally are stored when not in use. Local ordinance prohibits carrying the communal weapons on one's person in the Basecamp Leviathan — but how strictly that's enforced sort of depends on how much Security likes you. That being said: weapons that belong to a character, were brought from their canon or that they made, are exempt from this.

The 'guns' are essentially mini-railguns that use a magnetic track instead of a gunpowder propulsion system. The rounds from these railguns are capable of punching through a foot of solid steel. They are used sparingly, because rounds are difficult to recover and build with the limited resources on Ethyraia, so many NPCs will carry a gun for back-up and a spear of some sort for defense or hunting.

Discharging a firearm from the armory requires a written report on why. PCs will not be able to take guns from the armory at first, until they are 'trusted' by Security Officer Leon Rémi, whose security office operates out of the armory, so please feel free to work ICly at facilitating positive relationships with NPCs until such time as your character would be given a freer rein.

BATHS
Water is brought in via a series of pipes from the ocean several miles away. This was one of the very first projects that the survivors of the Adamant launched — these pipes are buried several meters underground to avoid the acid rain and interference from local animals. The water is desalinated and circulated for drinking, and water recycling is very important. Every form of wastewater is reclaimed and utilized in some respect, but one luxury that the people afford themselves here is a public bath. Heated by thermal units from the Adamant sunk into the ground, the baths are quite nicely heated and the water circulated on a cycle. The baths can comfortably fit 15-20 people at once, and the water is about 1.6 meters deep. In times of water scarcity or when there has been damage to the pipes, this luxury is the first to be shut down. Still, like the theatre's entertainment system, it's one of the little luxuries that keep people feeling sane and somewhat normal.

BUNKS
Most characters sleep in shifts and don't really have rooms of their own unless they are higher ranking military (i.e., officers) or civilian family units, who generally build little sheds or lean-tos where they can have privacy. Teenagers and anyone elderly or injured are permitted to sleep in the theatre.

Those that are single or otherwise unattached are generally in the hammock rack — a series of hammocks slung between the dragon's ribs in the far-back of the Basecamp. In addition to hammocks there are a few floor-level bunks. Some of these hammocks and bunks are shielded by makeshift tents to afford a bit of privacy for those who are co-sleeping.

PCs will be expected to either sleep in the hammocks in similar shifts (i.e., giving their spot up when they leave it) or they are free to build their own dwelling. If characters are hoarding resources to build themselves houses or similar, however, it will reflect badly on them, and the NPCs may grow mistrustful and hostile.

ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The Engineering Corps is always looking for new members who can contribute to some of its long term infrastructure solutions. The head of this department, Thorkil, is a large man with a booming voice who brews moonshine on the side and is the sort of bright, cheerful soul that can light up a room when he enters it. He is friendly with all the Hatchlings unless given a reason to be otherwise, and he is also very patient, gentle and understanding. If your character has demonstrated engineering skills of any coat or color (mechanical? electrical? outdated by hundreds of years? more advanced by a millennium?) please expect that Thorkil will ask if they'd be willing to help out!

Thorkil has welded a sign to a post out front, cheerfully painted by a gaggle of children to say "WELCOME!" Children crowd around the area for stories of Thorkil's tattoos.

The Engineering division has salvaged its tools and scrap from the Adamant’s wreckage, so it has all of the essentials from metal mills to CNC routers to circuitry tools. A holo projector throws schematics on the wall — a drill, a few potential shelter ideas for long-term settlement, and a new communications tower.

The Communications Department, headed up by the AI Cartagena, works out of the engineering labs. This department helps with disseminating useful information to the population, as well as managing the intranet and its infrastructure. Cartagena will be quick to point out (cheerfully) that they don't get days off and would love for someone else to make announcements once in a while! A small group of the communications department is also hard at work on a distress signal, persevering in the belief that someone will come looking for the wayward Adamant.

GYMNASIUM
A training ground staged within the southern fifth of Basecamp Leviathan, the gymnasium is a series of obstacle courses and weight-lifting equipment. Much of it is scavenged — weight bars were repurposed from the Adamant, plates welded on, that sort of thing. Many of the obstacles in the course are built from pieces of dragon bone, pieces of oddly floating rock make for great platforming races! There are climbing walls, slack lines (some dangerously high!), and netting woven together from one of the rare local plants that doesn't cause averse side effects. The gymnasium is roughly thirty thousand square feet — lots of room to run, play and train your heart out. It's an important feature in the crew's life as it's one of the only places to have any sort of recreational activity at all, so it's quite active.

THE GYMNASIUM IS CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO SINKHOLE.

HYDROPONICS
Hundreds of hydroponic units are set up in a small farming warehouse at the far edge of the basecamp, nearest the desalination pipeline. These gardens farm fresh produce to supplement the rations that survivors eat, but it's clearly not outfitted to support upwards of ten thousand people. These units were salvaged from the Adamant — the colonization mission never intended to work on hydroponics, but always intended to farm the land of the planet they settled. Many members of the agricultural department work on side projects here, such accommodating new crops to the Ethyraian soil and trying to figure out how to help crops survive the acid rains. Some of the agricultural folks seem convinced that building a long-term settlement on Ethyraia is the answer, not a distress call.

MESS HALL
The mess hall is where one would go to find food. They are still living off the flash-dried contents of the Adamant's stores — but they are beginning to run dangerously low, as the food was meant to only serve the members of the crew and not the civilians in cryostasis. It was always expected that once they found a suitable planet, the Adamant's AI and considerable robot servitor fleet (mostly destroyed in the crash) would be able to use the seed bank to create a sustainable food source. However, the land in Ethyraia is unsuitable to Earth-based crops (the soil is far too acidic for almost every type of Earth plant) and with the majority of the servitor robots destroyed, they have only the salvaged hydroponic gardening kits from the Adamant to account for fresh food, and the production yield is not high enough for everyone.

Rationing is strictly enforced — everyone gets a side of fresh vegetables twice monthly, and otherwise they are pretty much stuck with flash-dried food and the occasional non-toxic/poisonous local animal and plant life.

SCHOOLYARD
Anyone under eighteen is expected to attend school, which is a small, open-walled tent up north near the dragon's shoulders. Though both NPCs and PCs alike are welcome to blow the schooling off, there may be consequences for the PCs doing so — the NPC population would not look kindly on a group that doesn't protect and care for their children. It is recommended that school-aged PCs attend at least one class a day.

There are also optional specialized classes for those between the ages of 18-22, and being enrolled will defer them from mandatory patrols and resource runs. These classes teach medicine and engineering and other essential skills. PCs are welcome to take part in these courses or, if they are skilled enough in their field, to teach them. Please CONTACT THE MODS if you'd like to have your character teach a class, as there needs to be both a need and a valid reason why their particular skillset would be valuable to the survivors of the Adamant. Probably, no one is going to care very much about what the Romans were up to in 121 BCE — but a character that could teach basketweaving, or wilderness survival, or tracking would be very welcome. The NPCS come from a time when many things were automated, so although they've had a few years on Ethyraia to hone some skills, they would welcome anyone well-versed in these topics.

SHOWERS
A semi-public row of cubicles with drawn curtains near the gymnasium where people can shower. The water is heated, but its flow is on a timer and will only allot 3 minutes per person.

SOME OF THE SHOWERS ARE CURRENTLY NON-OPERATIONAL DUE TO SINKHOLES. THERE MAY BE A LONG LINE.

THEATRE
The other form of entertainment in the Basecamp is a little theatre house. It's an enclosed building of sorts, again built from heavily scavenged parts and supplies. The summer production is a classic, She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen. However, after performing this for the thessyx at the talent show, the theater department is moving onto their next show — Procyonate, for which there are many props to build. This show will be ready around Halloween.

There is floor space for 500-600 people to sit comfortably on the ground and watch movies and performances. It's the only solid building structure built within Basecamp Leviathan, and it's been very heavily fortified and soundproofed. In times of danger, it also serves as a place to put vulnerable members of the population, and there are currently plans to build a bunker of sorts beneath it. Any PC may help or take the lead on this project, as it's currently stalled out due to lack of skilled manpower.

In addition to housing the arts, the theatre has a variety of Earth media — movies from the dawn of the digital age onward. Many of the movies have the capacity to be shown in true 3-D, but unfortunately they don't have the equipment or the means. (Enterprising characters may be able to help with that!) Presently, their 'entertainment' center is a projector on a flat piece of the Adamant's heat shield, which gives the images a bit of a 'curve'. The theatre can also host dances, galas, and the occasional political forum.

As the only truly fortified building in the Basecamp, the theatre doubles as a place to care for children (most of the 'young' survivors are between 13-19 now, but babies have been born to the survivors since their crash-landing!), they are seeking not only folks who can sing, write music, play instruments, paint, draw, and perform, but also anyone who excels with toddler care. Such people will be hastily recruited and put to work!

MEMORIAL WALL
A wall where people have posted tributes to those that died — either in the crash, or in the ensuing struggle over the years. There are names, pictures, dates, sometimes little figures or carvings made. Sometimes candles are lit as well — made here on Ethyraia with tallow from the local animals. This is a somber, quiet place, and seeing PCs engage with this wall in a respectful way will raise the local opinion of them. The memorial wall can be overwhelming at first. With over 50,000 dead, there is a lot to remember.

BE CAREFUL AROUND THE SINKHOLE AS YOU NAVIGATE THE MEMORIAL WALL.

SANITATION
The sanitation department operates out of a cramped closet and works mostly through electrical tunnels and alleys. They upkeep the desalination pipeline and basic structures of the basecamp, but also attend to cleaning it. They handle a lot of the day-to-day cleaning that involves sewage, garbage, et al. After all, it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it! Not only will they take just about anyone, but if they warm up to you they'll let you in on a little secret... they've totally started an underground green house where they're growing some interesting plants...

(pot, it's pot).

THE UCSS ADAMANT

The Adamant is a class M Generation Ship. Commissioned in 2781 by Eldaya Rao, it was considered almost the 'Titanic' of its day — unsinkable, unbreachable, with luxuries that the destitute on Earth could barely imagine. With the premiere technology in cryogenics, capacity for nearly seventy thousand people, its seed vault and superluminal drive, it was expected to be able to sustain its crew for hundreds of years without so much as having to change a (proverbial) light-bulb.

The Adamant smashed into Ethyraia roughly five kilometers south-west from the body of the Leviathan. Due to scavenging, acid rain and a few tangles with hostile aliens, the Adamant has been largely abandoned. Although it has only been crash-landed for three years, it seems significantly more damaged than one would expect. Enterprising characters can (rightfully) assume there is still much left to find onboard, and could easily enter the Adamant through one of the many rifts in its hull. Due to the violence of the impact (no, really, there's an impact crater) roughly a third of the passengers in stasis died. Their bodies have never been recovered, and the Adamant serves as both a warning and a tomb.

SUB-LOCATION WITHIN UCSS ADAMANT
To be added.

THE GRAVEYARD

Since crashlanding on Ethyraia, the twelve-thousand survivors have faced perilous odds. Many have succumbed to illness, injury, and in very rare cases natural causes. They are buried south of Basecamp Leviathan. The grave markers are pieces of eroded metal torn off the Adamant. It looks as if several thousand people are buried here, and the graveyard itself is well-kept. It is tucked against the protective lee of a large cliff face, and has been fenced off. The graves are roughly 4 meters down to prevent scavenging animals.

SHENKSHYATKA

The above is the official Thessyxian name for what the humans have decided to colloquially call 'Jellyfish Forest'. Rather than trees, it has long, tall tendrils of some sort of quivering... red... plant? These tendrils will reach out and grasp at anyone within reach, their touch is lightly stinging. Be careful — coming in contact with this plant can cause some rather strange symptoms in humans, such as: nausea, headaches, hallucinations, paranoia... oh, and arousal. You might get only one symptom, you might get them all! If your character ventures to the east of Basecamp Leviathan, they will find this strange forest seems to extend from a sheer dropoff towards the ocean all the way to a jagged cliff face. The only way forward is through!

The Adamant's crew will warn PCs of the forest's effects... if asked. They will also warn characters to wear full length sleeves, pants and some sort of facial covering to avoid the forest's effects. There's no antidote to the symptoms, those affected just have to tough it out. Most of its effects should be out of your system within 48 hours...

XAIQALA

The name of the Thessyxian underground city-state. Due north of Basecamp Leviathan, about thirty kilometers away. The Thessyx have been... tolerant of the humans. Amused by them, perhaps. A subterranean amphibious race, they live on the shores of a beautiful underground lake. The city-state cannot be reached by conventional means — it requires either teleportation or a 'key' given to a character by a Thessyx NPC. These keys, if acquired, can disrupt the hardlight generators that shroud the city. However, the Thessyx do not trust easily and will be hard-pressed to give these out.

The city-state is massive, and its technology seems almost akin to magic — simple, elegant and completely lacking in external 'controls'. The Thessyx are a telepathic race, and their technological development reflects that in every facet of its integration.

More will be revealed about this race should the PCs venture to it.

DEJGAO

If one ventures east towards Jellyfish Forest, and opts to climb down the cliff-face to the ocean, they will find a small abandoned village. Parts of it look... almost human in design? But that couldn't possibly be. There is a sign nailed to a post that sports its name, DEJGAO.

No one in Basecamp Leviathan will talk about it or acknowledge its existence.

NPCS AND RACES ❀

MOD NPCS

AI CARTAGENA
The surviving AI of the Adamant, Cartagena is a navigational AI with substantial files on Earth History up to the current year (2801). They are warm, friendly and very much enjoy meeting new people. Cartagena is capable of porting small, 'mini' versions of themselves into a character's smartwatch or other device, where they would function like a version of the AI 'Friday' in the MCU — they would be capable of monitoring a character's wellbeing, heartrate, damage, etc. However: Cartagena would only do this if requested by a PC themselves!

They primarily live on a navigation pedestal salvaged from the Adamant, and are positioned near to the Chrysalis.

If a character wishes to have a one-on-one conversation with Cartagena, their inbox is (here). Threads with Cartagena will be limited to a maximum of 10 total replies from them — after which point the thread will be handwaved for maintenance of mod workload. Threads may be longer at mod discretion, if there is sufficient reasoning for it from a plot or world building perspective, but please do not expect this.

CAPTAIN OLIVIA CHILDE
Captain Childe is a 30 year veteran of the UCSS. She was chosen personally by the Rao family to captain the Adamant. She is in charge of the military personnel from the Adamant. Brusque, no-nonsense, she is a rather difficult woman with exacting standards and little regard for what she considers to be 'weakness'. Wary of the PCs while simultaneously interested in controlling them and their abilities to protect the Adamant's survivors, she could be a powerful ally... or a formidable foe. Her inbox is HERE. Player requests for her input or attention can also be submitted there.

As with Cartagena, threads with Captain Childe will be limited to a maximum of 10 total replies from her — after which point the thread will be handwaved for maintenance of mod workload. Threads may be longer at mod discretion, if there is sufficient reasoning for it from a plot or world building perspective, but please do not expect this.

ENSIGN ASHLEY PORTER
Ashley is the designated babysitter for the PCs because, in the words of Captain Childe, 'He brought you here, he can look after you'. While performing routine patrol around the interior of Basecamp Leviathan, he tripped and fell into the pool surrounding the Chrysalis. This seems to be the event that triggered the arrival of the PCs, and so this poor man has been saddled with their care. Part butler, part nanny, he will likely be equal parts exasperated and exhausted trying to keep up with the PCs! He is available for chatting and is happy to talk (maybe TOO happy to talk) about anything. His inbox is HERE. Player requests for his input or attention can also be submitted there.

As with both other NPCs listed above, Ensign Porter will be limited to a maximum of 10 total replies from him — after which point the thread will be handwaved for maintenance of mod workload. Threads may be longer at mod discretion, if there is sufficient reasoning for it from a plot or world building perspective, but please do not expect this.

PLAYER NPCS

Please note — the below NPCs are 'free use' for players, within reason. They can be used to facilitate plots or threads as needed, but they will not be played by the mods.

DOCTOR SUNYA HYACINTH
The primary physician of the Adamant. She wasn't actually finished her training, but every senior medical professional on the Adamant either died in the crash or in the intervening years and she had to step up in a big way. As a result, Sunya is busy, brusque, very in over her head and is never seen without a cup of coffee. She speaks in short, clipped, very quick sentences and always has her hair tied up with a pencil. If any PCs that have an advanced medical degree show up, her reaction is going to basically be to go 'oh thank god' and she may actually throw her lab coat in the nearest fire to go live in the woods for a few months. Who knows.

What you can use her for: she will help PCs with injuries, illnesses, or other maladies.

AID STATION WORKERS
Any player is free to invent a worker at the aid station for use in a thread! If you become particularly attached to one or find yourself using them often, please consider using the form below to submit them here for other people to use as well!

What you can use her for: feel free to boss them around, get help with minor wounds, etc!

SENIOR ENGINEER THORKIL BJØRNSON
Thorkil (yes) is the head of the Adamant's engineering division. He's a notoriously jovial prankster. Nearly seven feet tall, wide as a barn and as loud as that song your neighbor won't stop playing at 3 in the morning, Thorkil is the sort of man who could probably fight a bear and win. He is in charge of the alcohol distillation for Basecamp Leviathan, a technically illegal enterprise that Captain Childe tends to look the other way for. He was quick to welcome the PCs, and has probably challenged a few of them to an arm-wrestling match.

What you can use him for: Alcohol acquisition, engineering tricks of the trade, telling scary stories, one-night stands that go nowhere, and fateful tales of won (or lost!) arm-wrestling matches.

CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER LEON RÉMI
In direct contrast to Thorkil, Rémi is extremely distrustful of the PCs. He doesn't think they should have any authority or be allowed any measure of freedom until they've been substantially vetted. However, he was overruled by the Captain, who thinks that all hands should be on deck for the greater good. He will abide by her decision, but that doesn't mean he won't be an asshole about it.

What you can use him for: weapons acquisition (firearms only), knowledge of surrounding threats, low-level conflict with your character such as disagreements.

If you wish to escalate any conflicts with him, please use our plotting page. Rémi will not be racist or sexist, any doubt he has about a person's ability or skill will be directly related to the fact that they're strangers). He will be cold, snide, and standoffish — but he may warm up to the PCs over time (please assume this process will take 4-5 months and act accordingly). You'd be cranky too if you were constantly losing your crewmates and friends to the meatgrinder of Ethyraia.

THE ADAMANT'S SECURITY DIVISION
As with the aid station workers, feel free to invent individual NPC security members. They will take their cues from Rémi. If your character ends up having a semi-positive relationship with him, they will be treated decently by his crew. If they have friction with Rémi, the rest of the crew will likely be similar. They are a tough, close-knit group that has experienced a lot of loss, so PCs who are more willing to be sympathetic and/or follow security protocols will be treated with more respect than those that act in flagrant disregard of it.

ALIEN RACES

THESSYX
An amphibious race of aliens, the thessyx are telepathic and technopathic — they live underground in caverns with access to subterranean lakes. They have a tolerant sort of amusement for the humans on the surface — they haven't gone out of their way to help them, but they also haven't hindered them. They made contact in June, arriving in a small procession at the basecamp and expressing interest in what they called 'the Children of the Leviathan.'

The thessyx carry themselves quietly, moving through the base as if they were attempting to enter a body of water without disturbing it. Lightweight robes of some native skein cover their green-grey amphibian skin, but do not obscure the fact that each of them possesses four arms. They additionally have fins of varying colors along the back of their scalps. These creatures have slit noses; wide-set, irisless eyes; and mouths that stretch the full width of their skull. They avoid alcohol, as dehydration is very risky to them, but they don't avoid other intoxicating substances. They're also sensitive to light and sound.

The thessyx are nature-lovers. They espouse the belief that it is important to know of the rains, respect all living creatures, and live in harmony with nature. The thessyx appear to worship the dead dragon under which the humans have made their basecamp, and they believe that the hatchlings are the dragon's 'Chosen,' and that it brought them here, though they're not clear on what they've been chosen for. According to the thessyx, the leviathan was a giant dragon with elemental powers. This particular dragon favored lightning.

The Thessyx are a very long-lived species, and they have a ruling monarch known as a Thrisae, and then a democratically elected forum of eleven to govern the day-to-day lives of their people. The Thrisae is largely a figurehead, but their word is also absolute — they simply choose to use it sparingly, out of respect for democracy. There is little inequality even between classes, these people are a very 'it takes a village' sort. They are a peaceable race and conflict between them is quite rare and generally trends more towards civil.

Their tech is quite advanced! They do not have interstellar travel or the like, but it's more a matter of no desire rather than ability. The vast majority of their tech does not have an obvious 'interface', as they incorporated telepathic interfaces instead.

They have beautiful underwater cities and will happily show holographic images of them! There, they keep companion creatures analogous to dogs (think: more like seals or otters!) with a similar level of sentience, but they do not live with other races. They prefer to keep to themselves whenever possible. Unfortunately, visiting that city would require petitioning their monarch.

BESTIARY & HERBIARY ❀

BESTIARY

"Bats"

Convergently similar to Earth bats in size, appearance, and ecology, there are many species of Ethyraian "bats", many of them more active at night. The largest, the 'white bat', weighs about a kilogram and a half and has a 1.7 meter wingspan. The smallest is about twenty grams with a wingspan of 32 centimeters. Generally harmless to humans, they have strong jaws and rodentlike teeth and will bite in defense or to protect their young.

Highly social, bats twitter and squeak amongst themselves and are often seen in 'huddles' grooming acid-resistant wax into each others' fur and wings. They shelter to sleep and during the heaviest of rains (it's very cute) but are often highly active in lighter rain, closing translucent acid-resistant membranes over their large eyes. Often seen scavenging bones and carcasses, different species have a variety of diets, with some bats even preying on other species of bat.

Bats find protected places to lay soft-shelled eggs in clutches of two to five. Chicks are initially helpless little blobs but, fed by multiple members of the flock, soon grow strong enough to grasp adults, who will fly them to different roosts or away from danger. It's possible to raise a bat chick as a pet, but they're nervous, clingy animals who hate to be alone, cannot be housetrained, and don't do well in Basecamp Leviathan. Healthy pet bats usually belong to people who spend most of their time out of doors.

Chupacabras

-uncommon
-extremely vicious
-named for the mythical cryptid, these creatures have a top speed of 120 kph.
-they have tough, bony plates that deflect most weapons. its underbelly is vulnerable — to achieve the speeds it moves at, it needed to have plenty of room for flex and stretch.
-they tend to stalk their prey and will do so for many, many kilometers. if spotted, it will attack in a fury of speed.
-it goes for the kill, will generally try to snap someone's neck. thought to be a blood-drinker.
-solitary hunter. only three ever seen.

Dragonskeet

Common

Flighted individuals are anywhere from the most common 4cm to the extremely rare 60 cm. Larvae are smaller. Territorial, usually found in groups of four to seven but forming large swarms in the breeding season. Most active in the mornings and evenings and can usually be found hanging by their tails in cover during bright days and dark nights.

Dragonskeets are opportunistic, feeding on insects and other small animals, nectar, and the blood of larger animals. Larvae are parasitic and implanted in the flesh of large animals until they emerge and fly away. Rats often have larvae under their skins despite their obvious hatred of dragonskeets - the sound of a large specimen in flight agitates rats. Creatures like scorpiugs are too large to care and often bear numerous small lumps on their more tender parts.

There are many stories about humans with dragonskeet infestations but it's not that common. Unless someone is still outside for long enough, any dragonskeets attracted to them are actually trying to catch small animals frightened by their passage. They are defeated by clothing, even mosquito mesh, and if they find bare skin are much more inclined to drink someone's blood than infest them. Get any lumps checked out anyway. Dragonskeet teeth inject numbing and anticlotting agents and make for good needles, so live dragonskeets can usually be found in cages and pens within Basecamp Leviathan.

Golden Cliff Viper

- common
- a solitary viper native to arid scrub and grasslands, benign in appearance. their looks are unremarkable excepting a very faint metallic sheen under direct sunlight.
- generally reclusive; will only bite when antagonized or cornered.
- though nonlethal to most adult humans, their venom is hemotoxic enough to kill children and small animals such as dogs and cats.
- the bite is characterized by searing pain, declining blood pressure, and eventual hypovolemic shock brought on by internal bleeding.
- survivors can improve without antivenin but are likely to experience reduced kidney function.

Rats

-common
-'rats' live in warrens. They are 120-200 kilograms, with tentacles and a vicious open split down the crest of their body.
-they are pack hunters, and will work together to capture living prey.
-they will not eat dead meat.
-they are highly resistant to electricity and acid. they are weak to projectile weapons and very sharp objects. cutting off the tentacles seems to make them catatonic.

Scorpiug

-common
-males are 5-10 meters tall
-females are 40-60 meters tall.
-females spit acid.
-males produce a toxin that induces sleep and paralysis on others, but the toxin also acts as a sort of lure for a female, who will then come to devour the victims. this is a form of courtship.
-treat these encounters like minibosses in a jrpg, it's got a lot of hitpoints.

Serpentfly

-Uncommon
-shy, passive creatures, ranging from 15 to 30 centimeters in length
-they come in a variety of bright jewel-tone colors though they aren't poisonous or venomous
-their diet mainly consists of small insects

Spinemoles

-Common
-1 to 1.5 meters in length from nose to tail
-Prefer dark, enclosed spaces for their nests
-Spit acid

TELO

Standing between 2-3 meters tall, these herd-based prey creatures are fast and elusive, but can be eaten without repercussions by carbon-based lifeforms. The meat tastes faintly of hazelnuts, but has a texture similar to bison. They have been driven far away from the basecamp, and are easily startled by sound or smells that are unfamiliar to them.

HERBIARY

Honeyglow

-uncommon
-the glowing liquid holds its light for hours even after being removed from the plant, reacts strangely well with trace amounts of phosphorous to create a natural light fixture that will work for 10-12 hours.
-can be used to create a strong glue-like substance

Hooded Lady

-uncommon
-grows on water banks
-when the roots sense movement nearby the flower releases hallucinogenic spores, in small amounts it is harmless, but where there are larger clusters of the plants it becomes more potent
-a hallucinogenic compound can be made from the plant, but it has to be harvested in the correct conditions. too early, it won't be potent. too late, it could be toxic. the best times are shortly after acid rainfall, preferably at dusk when the plant is less active.

Jackweed

-common
-so-named for its rather, um, suggestive shape, jackweed has a very sweet odor. The plants are very delicate, and if they are troubled (or during acid rain periods) they will retreat back into their 'mound' for safety.
-chewing jackweed stalk will keep one awake and alert for several hours. however, it causes sore throat and dry mouth. some allergic reactions have been observed in the general population.

Mireweed

-common
-a semi-sentient carnivorous plant capable of (very) slow travel. what is seen above the surface is only a tenth of it, the plant has a complex root system. it will attempt to entrap prey and can paralyze with its touch, the plant will then 'pull' living creatures into the ground through a slow process. generally they are kept alive by an almost symbiotic relationship with the plant.
-humans are generally considered too large for the plant to expend energy on capturing them, but rumor has it that the ones near the Basecamp are beginning to grow hungrier...

Ribcage Plant

-Hard, bark-like leaves can be used for construction, does not seem affected by acid rain
-grows near water
-bioluminescent red pods hold seeds, inedible
-mature 'ribcages' will break away from the larger plant and essentially become 'tumbleweeds'.

Starspires

- tends to grow at a certain elevation
- appears to secrete a natural compound that can neutralize the acid rain. one can generally tell when acid rain is coming if a starspire starts to 'sweat', it usually means the acid rain will start falling within an hour. they are kept in pots throughout the camp as a sort of advance warning system.
- however, starspires can also produce a potent painkiller if one harvests their roots. one must take care not to kill the plant, as killing one plant in a 'clutch' will kill the entire system nearby. instead, one must carefully dig up the roots and 'prune' them. the plants generally glow green, they will turn blue while handled if they do not feel endangered, and will turn pinkish if they are 'afraid'.
- they do not seem to mind being harvested so long as one handles them gently.

Teardrop mushrooms

The mycelial/root systems are common, fruiting bodies with harvestable spore pods are rare. Fruiting bodies start to form after heavy acid rains, growing two or three crops of spore pods before withering. Spore pods are bioluminsecent gel in a thin transparent 'skin'. They are firm yet squishy and smell and taste like sweet melon. Native fauna, on eating the pods, drool spore-impregnated foam and appear drunk. Predators eating drunken animals may become intoxicated themselves.

Humans cannot metabolize raw pods properly and experience intense vertigo, clumsiness, and a great deal of foaming at the mouth without any of the more fun side effects. Loss of appetite is also common and symptoms can take upwards of a week to clear.

The gel has some industrial applications. If dried, baked, and ground the spores are killed and the relevant effects are mostly neutralized, leaving a safe non-glowing bluish powder which can be added to food to sweeten it, or to soaps, toothpaste, and shampoos to make them foam well and give them a pleasant smell/taste. It's still better not to overdo it, as ingesting more than a few grams in a day can cause mild dizziness, and dreams involving heights or flying/falling are common.

Tickplant

-common, do not require much water.
-when properly boiled the fuzzy heads make a tea that has anti-inflammatory properties.
-the seed pod splits open during acid rain cycles, this is how the plant propagates.
-the roots are poisonous if consumed.

To contribute your own plants and animals to the game's setting, please fill out the form below. Label your submission by putting either BESTIARY or HERBIARY in the subject line. If you have an image in mind, please include a link to it in the specified field.

When submitting flora and fauna for consideration, remember that all creatures found on Ethyraia are native to it and evolved here organically (though convergent evolution is plausible). With this in mind, we have a few guidelines:
❀ They must be in some way distinct from Earth-native species; they may be mundane, but cannot be 1:1 analogues to anything found on Earth.

❀ While your submissions may be inspired by your or other canons, we ask that they be altered in some way from these as well. Consider, for instance, changing the name and at least ONE trait of the species you are submitting.

❀ If your submission is directly inspired by a creature that exists in fiction or in real life, please note this somewhere in the submission to help the moderators make approvals faster.

You must wait until your submission is approved before incorporating player-submitted flora and fauna into your threads.

INSPIRATION ❀

This list is a brief overview of what the moderators drew inspiration from in the creation of the game. It may give you some insights into our overall themes and the general 'feel' of the game. This is by no means a complete or comprehensive list and we may add things over time as the game progresses and grows.
