◣ ARRIVAL ◢

SETTING ❀

ARRIVAL

You don't remember the details of your arrival. What you do know is that you wake up in a rather disgusting, goopy mess inside a squishy organic egg. Once you puncture the egg sac, you'll find yourself in knee-deep water. Slimy, disoriented... probably unhappy, and definitely slimy...

(really, the slime! it's everywhere!)

Nearby sits a large, pulsing white orb, almost like a cocoon, nearly the size of an elephant. It hangs from a mess of what seems like odd, organic sinew and matter, and there is a definite sense that something inside it is alive. it seems to have some unnatural effect on gravity, because water droplets seem to be suspended in the air around it, and you will experience the occasional bout of weightlessness within a fifteen meter radius all around this strange... thing.

Nearby will be another egg that seems to call to you — it will open when you touch it. Inside, you will find any items that came along with you. In a rather funny turn of fate, they aren't slimy. Maybe the gods of slime just have it out for you, who knows.

As you splash your way (angrily? dejectedly? curiously?) out of the pool of water, you will be greeted by Ashley Porter, a profusely apologetic (and riotously clumsy) man who explains in a fast-paced, nervous manner that it's all his fault that you're here on Ethyraia, he's so terribly sorry, and won't you let him help you get settled in?

__

You're in, as it happens, the body of an enormous desiccated animal corpse currently in use as a base for the survivors of a shipwreck. That would be, a starship wreck, not the regular sort with sails and such. Ashley will chatter a little about it as he helps you to the showers so you can (finally!) be free of the slime.

The survivors of the wreck dubbed the animal corpse 'the Leviathan' — little wonder, since it seems to resemble an enormous dragon. Nearly two kilometers from nose to tailtip, it curls in on itself as if it passed on peacefully while sleeping. No one is quite sure how long ago it died, but in the intervening time, its bones — made of no compound recognizable to Earth — petrified. Swaths of blue-white crystal have grown into various nooks and crannies, glowing faintly. Its skin has split in areas, pulled taut, and in others has turned nearly unbreakable. Its wings stretch out overhead, giving shelter to the population of humans that have taken refuge in its body cavity against the acid rain that plagues the planet.

The survivors of the UCSS Adamant have been on Ethyraia a little over three years. In that time, they have worked to add important features to their basecamp.

Make yourself comfortable, it seems you might end up being here a while...

NETWORK

So, you've arrived in Ethyraia! Woken up in a disgusting, gooey eggy mess. You've stumbled out, located your personal belongings (also in an egg! also goopy! Wild!) and have listened to the welcoming spiel by Captain Childe and are trying to take stock of their surroundings.

Your character will be offered a smartwatch! Highly technological, these little devices can do a wide variety of things! They can post to the Adamant's network (be careful, all the NPCs can see what you post! PCs will have to build themselves a private network if they want to communicate amongst themselves, or use inboxes!) and, once they have gained the trust of the NPCs, they will have access to the Adamant's bestiary and herbiary, as well as mission reports (to a certain level of clearance) in the past.

These smartwatches do not have internet access or anything like it. They weren't really intended for use in this way, whoops!

The watches can have text input, video input, audio input, or do text to speech or vice versa. They also have accessibility features for characters who may be sight, speech or hearing impaired.

Characters may also use their own devices. If a character happens to bring their phone with them, they could either modify it (if they have the skill) or speak with a local NPC technician to sync it to the local network. Wireless charging is the way of the future, so you shouldn't ever need to worry about it running low on battery!
