NPCS AND RACES ❀

MOD NPCS

AI CARTAGENA
The surviving AI of the Adamant, Cartagena is a navigational AI with substantial files on Earth History up to the current year (2801). They are warm, friendly and very much enjoy meeting new people. Cartagena is capable of porting small, 'mini' versions of themselves into a character's smartwatch or other device, where they would function like a version of the AI 'Friday' in the MCU — they would be capable of monitoring a character's wellbeing, heartrate, damage, etc. However: Cartagena would only do this if requested by a PC themselves!

They primarily live on a navigation pedestal salvaged from the Adamant, and are positioned near to the Chrysalis.

If a character wishes to have a one-on-one conversation with Cartagena, their inbox is (here). Threads with Cartagena will be limited to a maximum of 10 total replies from them — after which point the thread will be handwaved for maintenance of mod workload. Threads may be longer at mod discretion, if there is sufficient reasoning for it from a plot or world building perspective, but please do not expect this.

CAPTAIN OLIVIA CHILDE
Captain Childe is a 30 year veteran of the UCSS. She was chosen personally by the Rao family to captain the Adamant. She is in charge of the military personnel from the Adamant. Brusque, no-nonsense, she is a rather difficult woman with exacting standards and little regard for what she considers to be 'weakness'. Wary of the PCs while simultaneously interested in controlling them and their abilities to protect the Adamant's survivors, she could be a powerful ally... or a formidable foe. Her inbox is HERE. Player requests for her input or attention can also be submitted there.

As with Cartagena, threads with Captain Childe will be limited to a maximum of 10 total replies from her — after which point the thread will be handwaved for maintenance of mod workload. Threads may be longer at mod discretion, if there is sufficient reasoning for it from a plot or world building perspective, but please do not expect this.

ENSIGN ASHLEY PORTER
Ashley is the designated babysitter for the PCs because, in the words of Captain Childe, 'He brought you here, he can look after you'. While performing routine patrol around the interior of Basecamp Leviathan, he tripped and fell into the pool surrounding the Chrysalis. This seems to be the event that triggered the arrival of the PCs, and so this poor man has been saddled with their care. Part butler, part nanny, he will likely be equal parts exasperated and exhausted trying to keep up with the PCs! He is available for chatting and is happy to talk (maybe TOO happy to talk) about anything. His inbox is HERE. Player requests for his input or attention can also be submitted there.

As with both other NPCs listed above, Ensign Porter will be limited to a maximum of 10 total replies from him — after which point the thread will be handwaved for maintenance of mod workload. Threads may be longer at mod discretion, if there is sufficient reasoning for it from a plot or world building perspective, but please do not expect this.

PLAYER NPCS

Please note — the below NPCs are 'free use' for players, within reason. They can be used to facilitate plots or threads as needed, but they will not be played by the mods.

DOCTOR SUNYA HYACINTH
The primary physician of the Adamant. She wasn't actually finished her training, but every senior medical professional on the Adamant either died in the crash or in the intervening years and she had to step up in a big way. As a result, Sunya is busy, brusque, very in over her head and is never seen without a cup of coffee. She speaks in short, clipped, very quick sentences and always has her hair tied up with a pencil. If any PCs that have an advanced medical degree show up, her reaction is going to basically be to go 'oh thank god' and she may actually throw her lab coat in the nearest fire to go live in the woods for a few months. Who knows.

What you can use her for: she will help PCs with injuries, illnesses, or other maladies.

AID STATION WORKERS
Any player is free to invent a worker at the aid station for use in a thread! If you become particularly attached to one or find yourself using them often, please consider using the form below to submit them here for other people to use as well!

What you can use her for: feel free to boss them around, get help with minor wounds, etc!

SENIOR ENGINEER THORKIL BJØRNSON
Thorkil (yes) is the head of the Adamant's engineering division. He's a notoriously jovial prankster. Nearly seven feet tall, wide as a barn and as loud as that song your neighbor won't stop playing at 3 in the morning, Thorkil is the sort of man who could probably fight a bear and win. He is in charge of the alcohol distillation for Basecamp Leviathan, a technically illegal enterprise that Captain Childe tends to look the other way for. He was quick to welcome the PCs, and has probably challenged a few of them to an arm-wrestling match.

What you can use him for: Alcohol acquisition, engineering tricks of the trade, telling scary stories, one-night stands that go nowhere, and fateful tales of won (or lost!) arm-wrestling matches.

CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER LEON RÉMI
In direct contrast to Thorkil, Rémi is extremely distrustful of the PCs. He doesn't think they should have any authority or be allowed any measure of freedom until they've been substantially vetted. However, he was overruled by the Captain, who thinks that all hands should be on deck for the greater good. He will abide by her decision, but that doesn't mean he won't be an asshole about it.

What you can use him for: weapons acquisition (firearms only), knowledge of surrounding threats, low-level conflict with your character such as disagreements.

If you wish to escalate any conflicts with him, please use our plotting page. Rémi will not be racist or sexist, any doubt he has about a person's ability or skill will be directly related to the fact that they're strangers). He will be cold, snide, and standoffish — but he may warm up to the PCs over time (please assume this process will take 4-5 months and act accordingly). You'd be cranky too if you were constantly losing your crewmates and friends to the meatgrinder of Ethyraia.

THE ADAMANT'S SECURITY DIVISION
As with the aid station workers, feel free to invent individual NPC security members. They will take their cues from Rémi. If your character ends up having a semi-positive relationship with him, they will be treated decently by his crew. If they have friction with Rémi, the rest of the crew will likely be similar. They are a tough, close-knit group that has experienced a lot of loss, so PCs who are more willing to be sympathetic and/or follow security protocols will be treated with more respect than those that act in flagrant disregard of it.

ALIEN RACES

THESSYX
An amphibious race of aliens, the thessyx are telepathic and technopathic — they live underground in caverns with access to subterranean lakes. They have a tolerant sort of amusement for the humans on the surface — they haven't gone out of their way to help them, but they also haven't hindered them. They made contact in June, arriving in a small procession at the basecamp and expressing interest in what they called 'the Children of the Leviathan.'

The thessyx carry themselves quietly, moving through the base as if they were attempting to enter a body of water without disturbing it. Lightweight robes of some native skein cover their green-grey amphibian skin, but do not obscure the fact that each of them possesses four arms. They additionally have fins of varying colors along the back of their scalps. These creatures have slit noses; wide-set, irisless eyes; and mouths that stretch the full width of their skull. They avoid alcohol, as dehydration is very risky to them, but they don't avoid other intoxicating substances. They're also sensitive to light and sound.

The thessyx are nature-lovers. They espouse the belief that it is important to know of the rains, respect all living creatures, and live in harmony with nature. The thessyx appear to worship the dead dragon under which the humans have made their basecamp, and they believe that the hatchlings are the dragon's 'Chosen,' and that it brought them here, though they're not clear on what they've been chosen for. According to the thessyx, the leviathan was a giant dragon with elemental powers. This particular dragon favored lightning.

The Thessyx are a very long-lived species, and they have a ruling monarch known as a Thrisae, and then a democratically elected forum of eleven to govern the day-to-day lives of their people. The Thrisae is largely a figurehead, but their word is also absolute — they simply choose to use it sparingly, out of respect for democracy. There is little inequality even between classes, these people are a very 'it takes a village' sort. They are a peaceable race and conflict between them is quite rare and generally trends more towards civil.

Their tech is quite advanced! They do not have interstellar travel or the like, but it's more a matter of no desire rather than ability. The vast majority of their tech does not have an obvious 'interface', as they incorporated telepathic interfaces instead.

They have beautiful underwater cities and will happily show holographic images of them! There, they keep companion creatures analogous to dogs (think: more like seals or otters!) with a similar level of sentience, but they do not live with other races. They prefer to keep to themselves whenever possible. Unfortunately, visiting that city would require petitioning their monarch.
