Characters come into the game with a new seed power that they have to discover for themselves — it starts out small and then develops over time, in the form of power-ups earned by participating in specific events and then justifying those power-ups with character growth. My character did not have canon powers in addition to this, and in general characters are stripped of all their canon powers when joining Meadowlark.
That + the empathy bond was a result of basically a "shard" of a God who got destroyed being implanted in their chests upon being dragged to that world. The empathy bond was a latent ability that just triggered automatically upon touching another PC and required nothing in particular to make it work.
I'd love to keep the meadowlark power + empathy bond, because TBH Ian couldn't fight his way out of a wet sack. He's just a nerd engineer.
